P. endlicheri is an endemic tree of New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on mostly ultramafic substrate up to 1,000 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species is very common and does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 14,413 and 264 km², respectively. Therefore, P. endlicheri is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
P. endlicheri is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, from Goro to Tiébaghi, as well as the Bélep Islands and the Isle of Pines (île des Pins).
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
This tree grows in dense humid forest on mostly ultramafic substrate up to 1,000 m asl, but is has also been observed on volcano-sedimentary and calcareous areas.
Threats
Although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires or mining activities (Tiébaghi, Union Révolution, Ada, Graziella, Goro), this species does not appear to be threatened.
Conservation
P. endlicheri is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in numerous protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Mt. Do, Massif du Kouakoué, Vallée de la Thy, Haute Dumbéa, Montagne des Sources, Barrage de Yaté, Chutes de la Madeleine, Forêt Nord, pic du Pin and Pic du Grand Kaori natural reserves, as well as the Grandes Fougères, Dumbéa, Rivière Bleue and Côte Oubliée provincial parks.
