Planchonella contermina is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the ultramafic massifs in the northwest of Grande Terre. It is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate from 100 m to 500 m asl. Known from more than 10 locations, its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are respectively estimated to be 84 and 6,608 km². Potential threats are mining activities and uncontrolled bushfires. However, this species is locally aboundant and does not seem globally threatened. Therefore, P. contermina is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
P. contermina is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the ultramafic massifs in the northwest of Grande Terre, from Népoui to Yandé island (Poum).
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is locally abundant.
Habitat
P. contermina occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate from 100 m to 500 m asl.
Threats
The main threats are mining activities and fires. However, this species is locally aboundant and does not seem globally threatened.
Conservation
P. contermina is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud, but doesn't occur in any protected areas.
