Planchonella crassinervia is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, where it is quite widely distributed on the ultramafic massif of the south and east of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland or dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,150 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 3,348 and 204 km², respectively. Therefore, P. crassinervia is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


P. crassinervia is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is quite widely distributed across the ultramafic massif in the south and the east of Grande Terre, from Forêt Desmazures to Kouaoua.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is locally abundant.

Habitat


This shrub grows in shrubland or dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate up to 1,150 m asl.

Threats


Although some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities (Kouaoua, Thio Plateau, Camp des Sapins, Bogota, Nakéty, Vulcain), this species is common and does not appear to be threatened.

Conservation


P. crassinervia is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in several protected areas: Mt. Humboldt, Massif du Kouakoué and Barrage de Yaté natural reserves, as well as Côte Oubliée provincial park.
