Planchonella kaalaensis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the ultramafic massifs in the northwest of Grande Terre, from Kaala to Boulinda. It is found in shrubland on ultramafic substrate from 50 m to 1050 m asl. Known from over ten locations, its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are respectively estimated at 76 and 755 km². Potential threats are mining activities and bushfires. However, this species is locally aboundant and does not seem globally threatened. Therefore, P. kaalaensis is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v).
Geographical area
P. kaalaensis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the ultramafic massifs in the northwest of Grande Terre from Boulinda to Mont Kaala.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is locally abundant.
Habitat
P. kaalaensis occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 1050 m asl.
Threats
Potential threats include mining activities and fires. However, this species is locally aboundant and does not seem globally threatened.
Conservation
P. kaalaensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud, but doesn't occur in any protected areas.
