Phelline comosa is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia widespread on Grande Terre, from Col d'Amoss in the north to Yaté in the south. It occurs in humid forest at an altitudinal range 10-1,200 m asl on various substrates. This species does not seem directly threatened. This species has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the endemic family Phellinaceae. P. comosa is therefore considered Least Concern (LC).

Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by uncontrolled bushfires and mining activities: Goro (VALE), Camp des sapins (SLN), Kouaoua (SLN).
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species occurs in several protected areas: Aoupinié, Vallée de la Thy, Pic du Pin, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Mont Do, Nodela, Mont Humboldt, Forêt de Saille, Haute Yaté, Pic Ningua, Rivière bleue, Haute Dumbéa, Foret Nord, Massif du Kouakoué. This species has a high phylogenetic importance as it is part of the endemic family Phellinaceae.
