in Southern ProvincePycnandra chartacea is endemic tree of the southern part of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Rivière Bleue to Port Boisé. It occurs in forest at low and mid altitude (300-475 m asl.) on ultramafic substrate. Its area of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively 354 km² and 24 km², while the number of locations is equal to five. Main identified threats are linked to air-borne pollutants (Forêt Nord), tourism and recreation areas development (Koghi) allow us to project a continuous decline in the quality of habitat and number of mature individuals. Pycnandra caeruleilatex is considered Endangered (EN) B1ab (iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).
Geographical area
Pycnandra chartacea is endemic tree of the southern part of Grande Terre, from Rivière Bleue to Port Boisé. One ancient collection (Vieillard 2886) was made in Wagap, an area located on the northeastern coast and dominated by greywacke. Because this locality is way out of the species ecological range and it has not been collected or seen in that area, experts did not take this data into account.
Population
It is known from five subpopulations: Koghi, Rivière Bleue*2, Forêt Nord and Port Boisé.
Habitat
Pycnandra chartacea is found in forest at low and mid altitude (300-475 m asl.) on ultramafic substrate.
Threats
Main identified threats are linked to air-borne pollutants (Forêt Nord), tourism and recreation areas development (Koghi).
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, Pycnandra chartacea occurs in two protected areas : Rivière Bleue and Forêt Nord. Ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts are urgently needed, in particular : ensuring the follow-up of the only known sub-population and preserving it on delimited perimeters.
