Polyosma leratii is an endemic shrub or tree from New Caledonia, where it has scattered, but quite wide distribution across the northern half of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 400 to 1,040 m asl. This species does not seem to be threatened at the moment. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 2,164 and 64 km², respectively. Therefore, P. leratii is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


This species is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution across the northern half of Grande Terre, from the Grandes Fougères park to Mt. Mandjélia.

Population


Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is common.

Habitat


This shrub or tree grows in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary (and possibly ultramafic) substrate from 400 to 1,040 m asl.

Threats


This species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation


P. leratii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: Mt. Paniéa and Aoupinié natural reserves, as well as the Grandes Fougères provincial park. Prospection is suggested to better establish the distribution of this species.
