in Northern ProvinceSphenostemon oppositifolius is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, restricted to a few mountains of southern Grande Terre. It occurs in humid forest generally at mid to high altitude (200-1200 m asl) on ultramafic substrates. This species does not seem directly threatened. Its area of occupation (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 44 and 1,198 km², Sphenostemon oppositifolius is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU D2.

Population size is unknown.
Habitat
It occurs in humid forest generally at mid to high altitude (200-1200 m asl) on ultramafic substrates, at a lower altitude in Kuebini.
Threats
This species does not seem directly threatened.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species occurs in several protected areas : Mont Humboldt, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Massif du Kouakoué, la Dumbéa, Haute Dumbéa
