Sphenostemon pachycladum is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia widespread on Grande Terre from Pouébo in the north to Yaté in the south. Sphenostemon pachycladum occurs in mid and high altitudinal forest(250-1,350 m asl) on various substrates. This species does not seem directly threatened. Sphenostemon pachycladum is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Goro (VALE), Camp des sapins (SLN), Kouaoua (SLN).

Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in several protected areas : Montagne des sources, Barrage de Yaté, Massif du Kouakoué, Haute Dumbéa, la Dumbéa, Mont Do, Haute Pourina, Foret Nord, Forêt de Saille, Pic du Pin, Mont Panié, Vallée de la Thy, Haute Yaté, Rivière bleue
