Austrobuxus ellipticus is a shrub growing up to 2 to 7 m high, endemic from New Caledonia. This species is distributed from Yaté in the south of Grande Terre to Poindimié at the northern part. It occurs in scrubland ("open maquis") on ultramafic substrate up to 1,070 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is estimated to be 5,351 km² and its area of occupancy (AOO) 148 km². It is quite common and does not seem threatened. Therefore, Austrobuxus ellipticus is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


Austrobuxus ellipticus is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed from Yaté in the south of Grande Terre to Poindimié at the northern part.

Population


The population size is not known.

Habitat


This species occurs in scrubland ("open maquis") on ultramafic substrate up to 1,070 m asl.

Threats


No threat is identified for this species.

Conservation


Austrobuxus ellipticus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in two protected areas : Côte Oubliée, Parc des Grandes Fougères.
