Baloghia pininsularis is a shrub endemic to New Caledonia, only known from one locality: Pic N'Ga on Ile des Pins. This species had not been observed since 1982, but has been recently rediscovered. It occurs in shrubland and forest on ultramafic substrate from 100 to 200 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are both equal to 4 km². The main identified threat is habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires. B. pininsularis is therefore listed as Critically Endangered under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii).
Geographical area
Baloghia pininsularis is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is found only on Ile des Pins. This species had not been observed since 1982, but has been recently rediscovered.
Population
A single population is known at Pic N'ga.
Habitat
B. pininsularis occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate up to 200 m asl.
Threats
The main identified threat is habitat degradation by uncontrolled bushfires.
Conservation
Baloghia pininsularis is protected by legislation in Province Sud, but doesn't occur in any protected areas. Before a recent sighting in May 2019, this species had not been seen since 1982, so it should continue to be sought out on Ile des Pins in order to take in situ and ex situ conservation measures. It is recommended to inform the local Management Committee on the presence of the species in the concerned area. Moreover a protected area should be established in Pic N'Ga.
