Cleidion claoxyloides is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre while it is absent in the northwestern massifs and the Massif du Sud. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 10 to 800 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 8,053 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 116 km², C. claoxyloides is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


C. claoxyloides is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre while it is absent in the northwestern massifs and the Massif du Sud.

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common and abondant species.

Habitat


C. claoxyloides occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 10 to 800 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa).

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in one protected area: Mont Mou.
