Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 05/04/2018Cleidion macarangoide is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia with a scattered distribution the north and the central part of Grande Terre. It is found in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 30 to 300 m asl. The main threats identified are feral pigs (Sus scrofa), Rusa deer (Rusa tumorensis) and uncontrolled bushfires. Known from ten locations, its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are 56 km² and 6,937 km², respectively. Therefore, C. macarangoide is considered Vulnerable VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimated decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

C. macarangoide is an endemic species of New Caledonia with a scattered distribution between the north and the central of Grande Terre.
Population
Total population size is unknown but based on field observations, C. macarangoides is a common species on thalwegs.
Habitat
C. macarangoide occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate, from 50 to 300 m asl.
Threats
The main threats identified are feral pigs (Sus scrofa), Rusa deer (Rusa tumorensis) and uncontrolled bushfires.
Conservation
C. macarangoides is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in a protected area. This species should be included in the regional legislation for a better protection of the species. It is recommended to inform the inform the local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort on the presence of the species in the concerned areas as well as awarness amongs the population. Plus prospection between the central massifs and the Massif du Sud is recommended.
