Macaranga coriacea is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely across Grande Terre and is also found in the Ile des Pins and Lifou in Loyalty Islands. It is quite common and abundant, and it occurs in dense humid forest and on ultramafic substrate, from 10 to 600 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 44,792 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 312 km², M. coriacea is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


M. coriacea is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed across Grande Terre and is also found at Pic N'Ga in Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Lifou).

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common species.

Habitat


M. coriacea occurs in dense humid forest on various substrates, from 10 m to 700 m asl.

Threats


This species could be affected by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and mining activity (Tiebaghi (SLN), Goro (VALE)). However due to its large distribution, this species does not appear to be threatened at the moment.

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in three protected areas: la Dumbéa, Haute Yaté and Ilot de Pam.
