Macaranga vieillardii is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia with a discontinuous distribution in north, the central and the southern massifs of Grande Terre. It is quite common and abundant, and it occurs in dense humid forest or shrubland on ultramafic substrate, up to 550 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 8,769 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 156 km², M. vieillardii is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


M. vieillardii is endemic of New Caledonia with a scatterred distribution in north, center and southern massif of Grande Terre.

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common and abondant species.

Habitat


M. vieillardii occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate and shrubland, up to 550 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and mining activity (Plateau (SLN)).

Conservation


This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in three protected areas: la dumbéa, Cap N'dua and Nodéla.
