Description

Espèce uniquement répertoriée au Mt Panié entre 1400 et 1600m d'altitude

Hymenophyllum paniense is an endemic epiphytic fern on tree's trunk from New Caledonie. This species is only known in the north east of Grande Terre (in the Mont Panié massif). It occurs in high altitude from 1,300 and 1,550 m asl. Known from one locality, its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are both 8 km². The main threat is posed by invasive species (feral pigs (Sus scrofa) and rusa deer (Rusa timorensis)), causing habitat degradation. Therefore H. paniense is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criteria B1ab (iii)+B2ab(iii).

Geographical area

Hymenophyllum paniense is endemic to New Caledonia where it is only known from one locality in the north east of Grande Terre: Mont Panié.

Population

Population size is unknown.

Habitat

Hymenophyllum paniense is an epiphytic fern on tree's trunk which occurs in dense humid forest from 1,300 to 1,550 m asl.

Threats

The main threats to this species are invasive species causing habitat degradation (Rusa deer, Rusa timorensis and feral pigs, Sus scrofa). Climate change could also constitute a serious threat in the future because of the specie's narrow altitude range.

Conservation

Hymenophyllum paniense is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in one protected area: Mont Panié. Prospection in Mt. Panié is needed to collect more biological material and better estimate its population size and search that species in other northeastern massifs.
