Loxodiscus coriaceus is an endemic shrub distributed in a dispersed way along the western part of Grande Terre with an extension in the south as well as in Ile des Pins. This species occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between 100 and 1,000 m asl. This species does not seem threatened. Therefore with an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 7,144 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 132 km², L. coriaceus is assessed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Loxodiscus coriaceus is endemic to New Caledonia where it has a widely dispersed distribution along the west coast of Grande Terre with an extension in the south as well as in Ile des Pins.
Population
Population size is unknown but field observations indicate a quite common species.
Habitat
Loxodiscus coriaceus occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate between 100 and 1,000 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and mining activities at Koniambo and Goro.
Conservation
Loxodiscus coriaceus is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in 5 protected areas: Vallée de la Thy, Haute Dumbéa, la Dumbéa, Montagne des sources, Nodela. It is presumed that ex-situ reproduction is feasible.
