Santalum austrocaledonicum is a native small tree of New Caledonia gathering 4 varieties. This species is largelly distributed in Grande, Loyalty islands and Ile des Pins. This species is also present in Vanutau. It occurs in forest and degraded vegetation on various substrates. Although some subpopulations may be threatened, the species does not seem globally threatened with extinction. Santalum austrocaledonicum is considered Least Concern (LC).

Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species occurs in one protected area (Ouen Toro). It is recommended to bring taxonomic clarifications on one of the variety and to manage in a sustainable way sub-populations of Loayalt islands and Ile des Pins.
