Geissois lanceolata is an endemic shrub/small tree of the ultramafic massif of the west coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in shrubland and forest edges on ultramafic substrate. The main threats impacting this species are bushfires on several subpopulations and on-going mining activities. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are respectively estimated to be of 1,465 km² and 124 km² while the number of locations are estimated to be 8-10. Geissois lanceolata is therefore assessed as Vulnerable (VU) with criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with a continuing decline of all sub-criteria
Geographical area
This species is spread on the ultramafic massif of the west coast of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Boural to Gomen.
Population
Population size is unknown.
Habitat
It is found in shrubland and forest edges at mid and high altitude (100-1,100 m asl) on ultramafic substrate.
Threats
The main threats impacting this species are bushfires on several subpopulations and on-going mining activities (Taom, Kopéto, Paéoua, Boulinda, MéMaoya).
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord but not in province Sud. It occurs in one protected area: réserve de Nodela. It is recommended to carry ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts, in particular : multiplication seems possible for vegetation restoration.
