in Northern ProvinceHooglandia ignambiensis is an endemic tree (unique species of this genus) of northern Grande Terre (restricted to Panié and Tonine) in New Caledonia. It is found in altitudinal forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate. This species does not seem directly threatened because of its altitudinal habitat. Hooglandia ignambiensis is considered Near Threatened (NT) as it is close to qualifying for Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 because of its small area of occupancy (AOO) of 12 km² and the potential future impacts of climate change.
Geographical area
This species is restricted to the north-east of Grande Terre in New Caledonia where it is known in altitudinal forest of 2 massifs : Panié (Ignambi and Diahoué) and Tonine.
Population
It is known from 2-3 subpopulations and is sparsely distributed.
Habitat
It is found in altitudinal forest (900-1,150 m asl) on volcano-sedimentary substrate.
Threats
This species does not seem directly threatened because of its altitudinal habitat. Invasive species might have an impact on the longer term at this altitude.
Conservation
Protected by legislation in province Nord, this species is not found in any protected area. It is important to note that this species is unique in its genus. As this species might be difficult to spot, its distribution might be larger than what herbarium specimens show. It is therefore recommended to prospect the area (Colnett, Panié...). The extension of the protected areas network in north-east Grande-Terre would be benefic to this species.
