in Southern Province , in Northern ProvincePancheria ouaimensis is an endemic shrub restricted to Roches Ouaïème on Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in a shrubland at rather high altitude on volcano-sedimentary substrate. The main threats impacting this species come from bushfires which may directly impact this short vegetation, even though it seems this species regenerates well after fires. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being both estimated to 16 km², Pancheria ouaimensis is considered Critically Endangered (CR) using criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimation of one location and a decline of habitat quality and number of individuals.
Geographical area
This species is restricted to Roches Ouaïème on Grande Terre in New Caledonia.
Population
It is known of a single population.
Habitat
It is found in a shrubland at rather high altitude (650-900 m asl) on volcano-sedimentary substrate.
Threats
The main threats impacting this species come from bushfires which may directly impact this short vegetation, even though this species could be tolerant to moderate fires.
Conservation
Protected species by legislation in province Nord, this species is not present in any protected area. As this species is threatened by bushfires, its stations must be included in the maps of Sécurité Civile. The area of Roches de la Ouaïème hosts numerous narrow-endemic species. This species would benefit from a properly protected and managed area. Information panels are suggested. It is recommended to experiment ex-situ conservation actions (seeds banking, nurseries and ex-situ plantations).
