Pancheria dognyensis is an endemic shrub/tree of Grande Terre in New Caledonia known from three massifs (Dogny, Mandjélia, Ouaïème). It is found in dense humid forest at mid to high altitude on volcano-sedimentary substrate. The main threats impacting this species come from bushfires which may directly impact some subpopulations and from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and locally Pinus caribaea on Mandjélia). Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 16 and 552 km², Pancheria dognyensis is considered Endangered (EN) using criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimation of 3 locations and a decline of habitat quality and number of individuals.

Geographical area

This species is restricted to three massifs on Grande Terre : plateau de Dogny, Mandjélia and roches Ouaïème.

Population

This species is rather abundant on Dogny and seems rare in the other subpopulations (Mandjélia and Ouaïème).

Habitat

It is found in dense humid forest (mainly on edges) at mid to high altitude (700-1,000 m asl) on volcano-sedimentary substrate.

Threats

The main threats impacting this species come from bushfires which may directly impact two subpopulations (Dogny, Ouaïème) and from habitat degradation caused by invasive species (Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and locally Pinus caribaea).

Conservation

Unprotected by legislation, this species does not occur in any protected area. As this species is threatened by bushfires, its stations must be included in the maps of Sécurité Civile. This species occurs in two particular areas (Dogny and Ouaïème) which hosts numerous narrow-endemic species and would therefore deserve to be legally protected and managed. This species would benefit from ex-situ conservation actions (seeds banking).
