Pancheria xaragurensis is an endemic shrub/small tree of the south-east of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in shrubland at low altitude on ultramafic substrate, mainly along riverbanks. The main threats impacting this species are bushfires and past and future mining activities. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being estimated respectively to 16 and 160 km², Pancheria xaragurensis is considered Endangered (EN) using criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimation of four locations and an estimated decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.
Geographical area
This species is restricted to the south-east of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, around Thio and Côte OUbliée.
Population
This species is rare. Few individuals are found per locality.
Habitat
It is found in shrubland at low altitude (20-570 m asl) on ultramafic substrate, mainly along riverbanks.
Threats
The main threats impacting this species are bushfires and past mining activities resulting in erosion and riverbeds enrocking.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in one protected area : Massif du Kouakoué. Prospections are recommended along riverbeds of Côte Oubliée in order to assess the population conditions. Some subpopulations may already have disappeared. As this species is threatened by bushfires, its stations must be included in the maps of Sécurité Civile. It is recommended to experiment ex-situ conservation (seeds banking).
