Pandanus taluucensis is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to Mont Panié, in the northeast of Grande Terre. It is found in the summit's kauri forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate above 1,500 m asl. The main threats are severe habitat degradation by feral pigs and seed consumption by rats. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are both estimated to be 8 km², while the number of location is estimated to be one. Pandanus taluucensis is therefore assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a continuing decline of habitat quality.

Geographical area

Pandanus taluucensis is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, only known from Mont Panié in the northeast of Grande Terre.

Population

Total population size is unknown but is estimated to be more than 2,500 mature individuals.

Habitat

Pandanus taluucensis is found in the kauri (Agathis montana) forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate at the summit of Mont Panié from 1,500 to 1,630 m asl.

Threats

The main threats are severe habitat degradation by feral pigs and seed consumption by rats.

Conservation

Pandanus taluucensis is protected by legislation in Province Nord and Province Sud and it occurs in the protected area of Mont Panié. Research at Mont Panié is recommended to better estimate the population size and the threats. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions as well as invasive species control.
