Diospyros minimifolia is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia spread on the west coast of Grande Terre from Voh in the north to Païta in the south. It occurs in dry forest on calcareous or volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 5 - 170 m asl. The main impact identified comes from Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and bushfires. However, this species does not seem globally threatened. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 152 and 2,769 km², Diospyros minimifolia is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) with a decline of habitat quality and a number of locations slightly over 10.

Good regeneration has been observed.

Threats
The main impact identified comes from Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and bushfires. Overall, this species does not seem threatened.
Conservation
This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and in Province Sud. It does not occur in any legal protected areas but is found in fenced areas (preventing Rusa deer damages).
