Taxonomy

Red List Status -
Near Threatened (NT) , assessed in 10/12/2014Plerandra emiliana is an endemic tree of New Caledonia occurring in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate. It is restricted to two sub-populations at an altitudinal range 1,300-1,580 m. The habitat of Plerandra emiliana (high altitude dense humid forest) remains rather protected from the usual threats occurring in New Caledonia. The population size is unknown but it would be plausible that it ranges around 1,000. Using criteria D, P. emiliana qualifies for Near Threatened, close to Vulnerable (VU) D1. It would be recommended to assess population size and have a better knowledge of the vulnerability of high altitude forest and shrubland to threats such as Rusa Deer and climate change.
Geographical area
Plerandra emiliana is an endemic tree of New Caledonia restricted to two sub-populations on Mont Humboldt and Mont Kouakoué.
Population
Precise population size is unknown but it could range around 1,000 mature individuals.
Habitat
Plerandra emiliana is found in dense humid montane forest on ultramafic substrate, at an altitudinal range of 1,300-1,580 m.
Threats
The habitat of Plerandra emiliana (high altitude dense humid forest) seems to remain rather protected from the usual threats occurring in New Caledonia.
Conservation
Plerandra emiliana occurs in two protected areas (Réserve du Mont-Humboldt and Réserve du Mont-Kouakoué).Dense humid forests are a patrimonial ecosystem protected by the Code de l'Environnement of Province Sud.
