Protected species -

in Northern Province

Plerandra veilloniorum is an endemic tree of New Caledonia restricted to the east coast of Grande Terre (northern half) from Houïlou to Pouébo. It is found in dense humid forest on non-ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 600-1200 m.The habitat of Plerandra veilloniorum (mid altitude dense humid forest) remains rather protected from the usual threats occurring in New Caledonia. The main identified threat to this species could come from introduced rats eating the fruits of Plerandra veilloniorum, hence resulting in little regeneration. It is however insufficient today to project that it could affect all the taxa present in each sub-population.Its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 1,115 km2 and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 81 km². The number of sub-populations is estimated to be nine. A continuing decline is not currently observed nor estimated. Therefore, P. veilloniorum is assigned a status of Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

Plerandra veilloniorum is an endemic tree of New Caledonia restricted to the east coast of Grande Terre (Northern half) from Houïlou to Pouebo.

Population

Population size is unknown. When present in dense humid forest, this species can be abundant.

Habitat

Plerandra veilloniorum is found in dense humid forest on non-ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range of 600-1200 m.

Threats

The main identified threat to this species could come from introduced rats eating the fruits of Plerandra veilloniorum, hence resulting in little regeneration. It is not suspected to be vulnerable to fire because it occurs in dense humid forest at an altitudinal range of 600-1200 m.

Conservation

Plerandra veilloniorum is protected by local legislation (as a synonym in the Code de l'Environnement of Province Nord) and it occurs in a protected area (Réserve de nature sauvage du Mont Panié).
