Polyscias otopyrena is an endemic tree/small tree of New Caledonia spread in Grande Terre from Tiébaghi in the north to Yaté in the south. It occurs in forest and shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 150 - 1,200 m asl. This species does not seem directly threatened. Polyscias otopyrena is considered Least Concern (LC).

Polyscias otopyerna is not protected by local legislation. It occurs in several protected areas : la Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, Vallée de la Thy, Massif du Kouakoué, Parc des Grandes Fougères, Haute Dumbéa, Aoupinié, Rivière bleue
