Codia fusca is an endemic shrub of the Côte Oubliée of Grande Terre in New Caledonia. It is found in shrubland at low to rather high altitude on ultramafic substrate. The main threats impacting this species are bushfires and past and future mining activities. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being estimated respectively to 16 and 160 km², Codia fusca is considered Endangered (EN) using criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v) with an estimation of three locations and an estimated decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.
Geographical area
Codia fusca is restricted to the Côte Oubliée of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, in the valleys of Ni, N'Goye and Haute-Comboui.
Population
This species is known of a few localities where it seems rare.
Habitat
It is found in shrubland at low to rather high altitude (0-1,000 m asl) on ultramafic substrate.
Threats
The main threats impacting this species are bushfires and past and future mining activities in the area.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in one protected area : Massif du Kouakoué. Specific attention to this species is recommended during exploratory missions on Côte Oubliée (especially the program Planête revisitée). As this species is threatened by bushfires, its stations must be included in the maps of Sécurité Civile. It is recommended to collect seeds to carry ex-situ conservation.
