Paracryphia alticola is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia widespread on Grande Terre from Mandjélia in the north to Mont Humboldt in the south. Paracryphia alticola occurs in altitudinal forest (600-1,600 m asl) on ultramafic or volcano-sedimentary substrate. This species does not seem directly threatened. Paracryphia alticola is considered Least Concern (LC).

Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in several protected areas : Nodela, Aoupinié, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic Ningua, Forêt de Saille, Mont Panié, Mont Humboldt
