Alstonia odontophora is a tree growing up to 6-10 m high endemic from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the Grand Sud massif in the south the Grande Terre, from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Dumbea area with a discattered observations at Thio. It grows in forets on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 150-1,100 m asl. This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and a mining activities at Goro. This species is common and it occurs in several protected areas. With an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) and Area of Occupancy (AOO) respectively equal to 1,955 and 240 km², Alstonia odontophora is considered as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


Alstonia odontophora is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the Grand Sud massif in the south the Grande Terre, from the far south of the Grande Terre to the upper limit at Dumbea area with a discattered observations at Thio.

Population


The population size is not known. Field prospections indicate that the species is common.

Habitat


Alstonia odontophora grows in forets on ultramafic substrate at an altitude range of 150- 1,100 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem threatened although some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires and a mining activities at Goro.

Conservation


Alstonia lenormandii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does occur in several protected areas: Pic du grand Kaori, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Rivière bleue, Côte Oubliée, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa.
