Gymnostoma chamaecyparis is a large endemic tree from New Caledonia. It is distributed in the north west (from Nékoro to Poum) and the ultramafic areas in the southern half of Grande Terre ( from Ouinné to Houaïlou). It occurs in shrubland on serpentine and ultramafic substrates up to 1,150 m asl. Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 10,217 and 184 km², respectively. Therefore, Gymnostoma chamaecyparis is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Gymnostoma chamaecyparis is endemic to New Caledonia where it is distributed in the north west (from Nékoro to Poum) and the ultramafic areas in the southern half of Grande Terre ( from Ouinné to Houaïlou).

The population size is unknown.

Habitat


This species grows in shrubland on serpentine and ultramafic substrates up to 1,150 m asl.

Threats


Some subpopulations may be impacted by habitat degradation by bushfires or mining activities, but globally this species does not seem to be threatened.

Conservation


Gymnostoma chamaecyparis is unprotected by legislation in New Caledonia but it occurs in three protected areas: Forêt de Saille, Mont Mou, Côte Oubliée.
