Hunga rhamnoides is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, as well as in the northern islands (Belep islands, Yandé island) and Ile des Pins at the far south of Grande Terre. It occurs in various habitats (shrubland, forest) on ultramafic and calcareous substrates up to 1,000 m asl. This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 18,269 and 352 km², respectively. Therefore, Hunga rhamnoides is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Hunga rhamnoides is endemic to New Caledonia where it is widely distributed across Grande Terre, as well as in the northern islands (Belep islands, Yandé island) and Ile des Pins at the far south of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate that this species is very common.
Habitat
This species occurs in various habitats (shrubland, forests) on ultramafic and calcareous substrates up to 1,000 m asl.
Threats
This species is common and it does not seem to be threatened.
Conservation
Hunga rhamnoides is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in several protected areas: Haute Dumbéa, la Dumbéa, Grandes Fougères, Rivière bleue, Côte Oubliée, Aoupinié.
