Least Concern (LC) , assessed in 21/07/2016Cunonia pulchella is an endemic small tree of New Caledonia. It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at mid and high altitude. This species is largely distributed and does not seem directly threatened. Cunonia pulchella is considered Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
Cunonia pulchella is largely distributed across Grande Terre in New Caledonia, from Monts Koghis to Pouébo.
Population
It is sometimes a dominant species (on Mont Panié for example)
Habitat
It is found in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at mid and high altitude (500-1,600 m asl).
Threats
This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities (MéMaoya, Koniambo, Camp des sapins), bushfires and habitat degradation caused by the invasives Rusa rusa deer (Rusa timorensis)s and feral pigs.
Conservation
Unprotected by legislation, this species is found in numerous protected areas : Parc des Grandes Fougères, Mont Humboldt, Forêt de Saille, Vallée de la Thy, Pic du Pin, Mont Panié, Nodela, Aoupinié, Massif du Kouakoué, Pic Ningua.
