Geniostoma imbricatum is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the summits of two massifs in the south of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland on ultramafic soil between 1,100 m and 1,150 m asl. Known from two localities, its extent of occurrence (EOO) is 32 km² and its area of occupancy (AOO) is 16 km². It is not threatened at the moment, but as it occurs in few localities at high altitudes, it could be impacted by climate change in the future, although the exact timescale and extent of impact are uncertain. Therefore, G. imbricatum is precautionarily listed as Near Threatened (NT), approaching the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion D2.

The population size is not known.
Habitat
Geniostoma imbricatum occurs in altitudinal shrubland ('maquis' vegetation) on ultramafic soil between 1,100 m and 1,150 m asl.
Threats
No threat is known to this day. However, Geniostoma imbricatum could very well be impacted by climate change in the future, since it only occurs in high altitudes.
Conservation
Geniostoma imbricatum is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in two protected areas: Massif du Kouakoué and Mont Humboldt.
