Psychotria sp. nov. "xaracuensis" is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, known from Monéo to Prokoméo in the North of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland or forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 20-980 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to on-going mining activities. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 48 and 397 km², while the number of locations are estimated to be five: Monéo, Poro, CFTMC (SLN), Kouaoua (SLN), Prokoméo. Psychotria sp. nov. "xaracuensis" is therefore assessed as Endangered (EN) with criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with a continuing decline of all concerned sub-criteria.
Geographical area
Psychotria sp. nov. "xaracuensis" is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, known from Monéo to Prokoméo in the North of Grande Terre.
Population
It is known from four sub-populations : Monéo, Poro, Ménazi,Prokoméo.
Habitat
Psychotria sp. nov. "xaracuensis" occurs in shrubland or forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 20-980 m asl.
Threats
Main identified threats are linked to on-going mining activities: Kouaoua (SLN), CFTMC (SLN).
Conservation
Psychotria sp. nov. "xaracuensis" is unprotected by legislation and it does not occur in any protected area. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed to ensure the follow-up of known sub-populations, to preserve a viable population on delimited perimeters on the mining area.
