Psychotria sp. nov. "mackei" is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, known from Kaala, Ouazangou, Taom in the North of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 100- 1,000 m asl. Main identified threats are linked to on-going mining activities. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being respectively estimated to 32 and 122 km², while the number of locations are estimated to be four: Etoile du Nord (SLN), Mont Kaala, Mont Ouazangou, Mont Taom. Psychotria sp. nov. "mackei" is therefore assessed as Endangered (EN) with criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,iv,v) with a continuing decline of all concerned sub-criteria.
Geographical area
Psychotria sp. nov. "mackei" is an endemic shrub of New Caledonia, known from Kaala, Ouazangou, Taom in the North of Grande Terre.
Population
It is known from three sub-populations: Mont Kaala, Mont Ouazangou, Mont Taom.
Habitat
Psychotria sp. nov. "mackei" occurs in shrubland on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 100- 1,000 m asl.
Threats
Main identified threats are linked to on-going mining activities: Ouazangou (NMC), Etoile du Nord (SLN).
Conservation
Psychotria sp. nov. "mackei" is unprotected by legislation and it does not occur in any protected area. This species would benefit from ex-situ and in-situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed to ensure the follow-up of known sub-populations, to preserve a viable population on delimited perimeters on the mining area. Prospections in Ouazangou seem urgently needed.
