Psychotria sp. nov. "schmidii" is an endemic shrub, widespread in Grande Terre from Forêt de Sailles in the North to Port boisé in the South of New Caledonia. It occurs in dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate at an altitudinal range 0-800 m asl. This species does not seem globally threatened. Psychotria sp. nov. "schmidii" is considered Least Concern (LC).

This species does not seem globally threatened. Some subpopulations may be threatened by mining activities: Goro (VALE).
