Red List Status -
Near Threatened (NT) , assessed in 08/09/2017Oxera robusta is a big woody climber, endemic to New Caledonia and only known from two locations (Col d'Amos and Mandjelia) in the north-east of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrates between 470 and 750 m asl. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are estimated to be 16 and 18 km², respectively. Although it could be affected by habitat degradation by Rusa Deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs, this species does not seem significantly threatened at the moment, is locally abundant, and shows good regeneration. Because of the potential threat from invasives, which could quickly impact the species, it is listed as Near Threatened (NT) close to Vulnerable under criterion D2.
Geographical area
O. robusta is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to two locations in the northeastern part of Grande Terre (Col d'Amos and Mandjelia).
Population
Total population size is unknown, but field observations indicate it is abundant and has a good regeneration capacity.
Habitat
O. robusta is found in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary substrate between 470 and 750 m asl.
Threats
Because of its abundance and good regeneration capacity, this species does not seem directly threatened at the moment. However, habitat degradation by Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa) is a potentiel threat.
Conservation
This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia and does not occur in any protected areas.
