Elaeocarpus guillainii is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the central and northeastern mountain ranges of Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 600 and 950 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 1,721 and 40 km², respectively. The number of locations is estimated at 10, but is probably higher, since these tall trees are seldom sampled. The main threats are bushfires and invasive species, that cause habitat degradation. Therefore, E. guillainii is listed as Near Threatened (NT), close to VU under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+B2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

E. guillainii is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a scattered distribution in the central and northeastern mountain ranges of Grande Terre: from Parc des Grandes Fougères (Farino) to Mont Ignambi (Pouébo).

Population

Population size is unknown, but field observations indicate the species is not common.

Habitat

E. guillainii occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary soil between 600 and 950 m asl.

Threats

The main threats are bushfires and invasive species (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), that cause habitat degradation.

Conservation

This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in two protected areas: Parc des Grandes Fougères and Aoupinié. The local authority responsible for the coordination of the firefighting effort should be informed about the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Finally, further prospection in the central and northeastern mountain range is recommended.
