Pittosporum tchingouensis

Vulnerable (VU) , assessed in 23/07/2015Pittosporum "tchingounensis" (NOU 035102) is an endemic species of New Caledonia known only from two localities : massif du Tchingou and Oua-Tilou. Genetic studies show that this taxon is completely distinct from other species of Pittosporum. With an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy equal to 8 km² and considering the potential mining activities on Massif du Tchingou, P. "tchingounensis"(NOU 035102) qualifies as Vulnerable (VU) D2.
Geographical area
P. "tchingounensis" (NOU 035102) is an endemic species of New Caledonia known only from two localities : massif du Tchingou and Oua-Tilou.
Population
Population size is unknown due to a lack of data.
Habitat
P. "tchingounensis" (NOU 035102) occurs in high altitude shrubland on ultramafic substrate.
Threats
Currently, P. "tchingounensis" (NOU 035102) does not appear to be impacted by any specific threat, but could be significantly affected if mining activity was launched on the massif du Tchingou.
Conservation
P. "tchingounensis" (NOU 035102) is not protected by any legislation and does not occur in any protected areas of New Caledonia. Given our lack of knowlege about this species, it is highly recommended that field surveys are conducted and immediate conservation measures be taken.
