Elaeocarpus speciosus is an endemic tree from New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre. It occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary and ultramafic soil up to 900 m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 10,974 and 140 km², respectively. Some subpopulations are impacted by invasive species, but globally the species is not threatened. Therefore, E. speciosus is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


E. speciosus is endemic to New Caledonia, where it has a wide distribution across Grande Terre: from Port Boisé (Yaté) to the Taom massif (Kaala-Gomen).

Population size is unknown.

Habitat


E. speciosus occurs in dense humid forest on volcano-sedimentary and ultramafic soil up to 900 m asl.

Threats


Some subpopulations are impacted by invasive species, that cause habitat degradation (rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa)), but globally the species is not threatened.

Conservation


This species is protected by legislation in Province Nord and occurs in four protected areas: Parc de la Rivière Bleue, Haute Yaté, Parc de la Dumbéa and Aoupinié. Taxonomic studies are recommended, since the taxon is suspect to contain two different species.
