Endangered (EN) , assessed in 27/09/2022Arthroclianthus sp.nov. Jaffré 1291 is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, restricted to the Koniambo region in the north west of Grande Terre. It occurs in scrubland on serpentine substrate up to 200 m asl. The main threats to this species are bushfires and indirectly from ongoing mining activities (road construction, soil erosion) on the Koniambo massif. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 51 and 28 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be five. Therefore, Arthroclianthus sp.nov. Jaffré 1291 is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,v)+2ab(i,ii,iii,v) with a continuing decline of all the concerned sub-criteria.
Geographical area
Arthroclianthus sp.nov. Jaffré 1291 is endemic to New Caledonia where it is known from the Koniambo region in the north west of Grande Terre.
Population
The population size is not known.
Habitat
This species grows in low elevation shrubland ('maquis') on serpentine substrate up to 200 m asl.
Threats
The main threat to this species is posed by bushfires and indirectly ongoing mining activities (road construction, soil erosion) at Koniambo.
Conservation
Arthroclianthus sp.nov. Jaffré 1291 is protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected areas. This species would benefit from ex situ and in itu emergency conservation actions. To ensure the persistence of the known population, it is proposed that monitoring should occur on these sites as well as information of the DSCGR (government department overseeing firefighting actions) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas.
