Gyrocarpus americanus subsp. americanus is an indigenous tree (growing up from 8 to 20 m high) from New Caledonia. It is mainly found in the northern half of Grande Terre as well as in Walpole island. This species occurs mostly in low altitudinal forest on calcareous substrates, from 1 to 600 m asl. This species was seen at an altitude of 600 m asl at Tendé (Voh) in 2013. Despite having an Area of Occupancy (AOO) and an Extent of Occurrence (EOO) equal to 88 and 22,069 km² respectively, Gyrocarpus americanus subsp. americanus is considered to be a common species in New Caledonia. It is not thought to approach the conditions for listing as threatened under any criterion and is listed as Least Concern (LC).

Population


It is very common in New Caledonia.

Habitat


It occurs mostly in low altitudinal forest on calcareous susbstrates, from 1 to 400 m asl. This species was also seen at an altitude of 600 m asl at Tendé (Voh) in 2013.

Threats


This subspecies does not appear to be significantly threatened at the moment. Though some subpopulations may be impacted by bushfires.

Conservation


This autochtonous species is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protected area.
