Austrobuxus vieillardii is an endemic shrub or tree from New Caledonia. It is restricted to the north-east part of Grande Terre, from Aoupinié to Mandjélia. It is found in forest borders and in humid forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 300-1,600 m asl. The lower elevation subpopulations and the subpopulations present in forest borders can be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires. Known from more than ten locations, its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) are respectively estimated to 96 and 1,707 km², Austrobuxus vieillardii is considered Near Threatened (NT) close to VU B1ab(iii,v)+2ab (iii,v).

Austrobuxus vieillardii is endemic to New Caledonia where it is restricted to the north-east part of Grande Terre, from Aoupinié to Mandjélia.

Population


The population size is not known.

Habitat


This species occurs in forest borders and in humid forests on volcano-sedimentary substrate at an altitudinal range 300-1,600 m asl.

Threats


The lower elevation subpopulations and the subpopulations present in forest borders can be impacted by uncontrolled bushfires.

Conservation


Austrobuxus vieillardii is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in two protected areas : Aoupinié, Mont Panié.
