Diospyros rufotomentosa is an endemic tree/shrub of New Caledonia found in the south and east coast of Grande Terre. It is found in humid forest at low-mid altitude on ultramafic substrate. The main threats impacting this species come from habitat fragmentation and degradation linked to uncontrolled bushfires. Its area of occupancy (AOO) and extent of occurrence (EOO) being estimated respectively to 56 and 2,625 km², Diospyros rufotomentosa is considered Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v), with an estimation of seven locations and an estimated continuous decline of habitat quality and number of mature individuals.

Diospyros rufotomentosa is an endemic tree/shrub of New Caledonia spread in the south and east coast of Grande Terre: from Kuebini to Moneo-Néavin.

It is found in humid forest at low-mid altitude (2-300 m asl) on ultramafic substrate.

Protected by legislation in Province Nord, this species is present in three protected areas : Vallée de la Thy, Rivière bleue, Haute Dumbéa
