Claoxylon insulanum is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as in Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Maré, Lifou et Ouvéa). This species is found in humid forest and secondary forests on calcareous, volcano-sedimentary and sometimes ultramafic substrate, up to 750 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 48,677 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 144 km², C. insulanum is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area


C. insulanum is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as in Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Maré, Lifou et Ouvéa).

Population


Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common species.

Habitat


C. insulanum occurs in humid forest and secondary forests on calcareous, volcano-sedimentary and sometimes ultramafic substrate, up to 750 m asl.

Threats


This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by fires, Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) and feral pigs (Sus scrofa).

Conservation


C. insulanum is not protedted by legislation in New Caledonia and it does not occur in any protedted area.
