Oxera ovata is a slender liana endemic to New Caledonia, largely distributed from the center to the south of Grande Terre. It occurs in shrubland and on the edge of dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate, from 10 to 600m asl. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are 7,129 km² and 260 km², respectively. This species does not seem threathened and is quite common and abundant. Thus, Oxera ovata is listed as Least Concern (LC).
Geographical area
O. ovata is endemic to New Caledonia where it is largely distributed from the center to the south of Grande Terre.
Population
Population size is unknown but based on field observations, Oxera ovata is quite common.
Habitat
O. ovata occurs in scrubland and on the edge of dense humid forest on ultramafic substrate between 10 and 600 m asl.
Threats
This species does not seem to be threatened, although some subpopulations may be impacted by mining activities (Goro (Vale), MKM, Montagnat) and bushfires.
Conservation
This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in four protected areas: Chutes de la Madeleine, Barrage de Yaté, Haute Dumbéa and la Dumbéa. This species is cultivated at the IAC (Institut Agronomique de Nouvelle-Calédonie) nursery of Saint-Louis and also in an increasing garden plant in Nouméa.
