Cleidion vieillardii is an endemic shrub or tree of New Caledonia largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as at Belep islands, Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Maré). This species is abundant and it occurs in dense humid forest on various substrate, up to 1,000 m asl. With an extent of occurrence (EOO) equal to 60,461 km² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of 652 km², C. vieillardii is assessed as Least Concern (LC).

Geographical area

C. vieillardii is endemic of New Caledonia where it is largely distributed in Grande Terre as well as at Belep islands, Ile des Pins and Loyalty Islands (Maré).

Population

Population size is unknown but field observations show it is a common species.

Habitat

C. vieillardii occurs in dense humid forest on various substrate (ultramafic, calcareous and volcano-sedimentary), up to 1,000 m asl.

Threats

This species could be affected by fires, invasives species (Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), feral pigs (Sus scrofa), goats (Capra aegagrus)), urbanisation and mining activities ((Goro (VALE),Cap Bocage (SMT), Camp des sapins (SLN), Tiebaghi (SLN)).

Conservation

This species is not protected by any legislation in New Caledonia but it does occur in several protected areas: Barrage de Yaté, Haute Dumbéa, Haute Yaté, la Dumbéa, Massif du Kouakoué, Montagne des sources, Mont Mou, Nodela, Pic du Pin, Rivière bleue, Vallée de la Thy, Forêt de Saille, Forêt cachée and Foret Nord.
