Endangered (EN) , assessed in 26/10/2018

Quintinia hyehenensis is an endemic shrub from New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the summits of the northeast of Grande Terre: roches Ouaïeme, Mt. Panié, Mt. Colnett and Mt. Ignambi. It could also occur on Mt. Aoupinié, but this remains to be confirmed (Pillon & Héquet, 2019). It occurs in dense humid forest and shrubland on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 600 to 1,500 m asl. This species is threatened by bushfires and invasive species degrading its habitat. Its extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) are estimated at 85 and 24 km², respectively, and the number of locations is estimated to be five. Therefore, Q. hyehenensis is listed as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v).

Geographical area

This species is endemic to New Caledonia, where it is restricted to the summits of the northeast of Grande Terre: roches Ouaïeme, Mt. Panié, Mt. Colnett and Mt. Ignambi. It could also occur on Mt. Aoupinié, but this remains to be confirmed (Pillon & Héquet, 2019).

Population

Population size is unknown.

Habitat

This small tree grows in mid and high elevation dense humid forest or shrubland on volcano-sedimentary substrate from 600 to 1,500 m asl.

Threats

Main threats to this species include bushfires and invasive species (feral pigs, Sus scrofa), that degrade its habitat.

Conservation

Q. hyehenensis is not protected by legislation in New Caledonia, but it occurs in one protected area: Mt. Panié natural reserve. This species would benefit from ex situ and in situ emergency conservation actions. It is proposed that monitoring should occur to ensure the persistence of known subpopulations. It is recommended to inform the DSCGR (government department overseeing firefighting actions) on the presence of the species in the concerned areas. Besides, further prospection on Mt. Aoupinié is needed to confirm its presence there.
